How to get around in Prague

On foot

Prague is quite small, and just walking around is the best part. You will be able to enjoy all of the views of the streets, and you will find out that the places are not so far apart from one another.

Public transport

The city has a first rate public transport system. The underground has three lines, identified by the letters A (Skalka- Dejvicka), B (Cerny Most- Zlicin) and C (Holesovice-Haje). It is possible to change stations at Muzeum, Mustek and Florenc. The underground operates every day, from 5am to mid-night. During rush hours the trains depart every 2-3 minutes, during other periods the wait can be from 4 to 10 minutes.

It is possible to reach the top of Petrin Hill by means of a rack- rail train, which calls at Ujezd, Nebozizek and Petrin. The train operates every day from 9am to 11pm (Summer) and from 9:15 to 8:45pm (Winter). Departures are every 10-15 minutes.

It is advisable NOT to buy the 3 day transport ticket for 200 or so crowns. It is too expensive, and  Prague is so easy to see by foot; if you need the metro/tram, it’s best to buy the 8 or 12 crown one-use tickets.

Taxis

Taxis have a bad reputation all over Eastern Europe, and Prague is no exception. If you need one, better call it and check that the driver has authorization and all, otherwise you might get ripped of big time. Also, never accept to change money in a taxi, or accept advice on where to change money from a taxi driver.

Cars

Renting a car is not much of a good option, due to the heavy traffic and the cobbled streets. Advisable only if you want to travel the neighbouring area, or if you want to go around very late at night.

Bicycle

Going around by bike is not a very good options, because of the aforementioned cobbled streets, the likeliness of having your bike stolen (lock it very well, possibly to poles and the like), and the absence of bike lanes. Still it can be an adventure, if your life’s not very dear to you.
